October Newsletter

Hi All.

Thanks for reading this. To begin let’s ask how everyone is. We hope that you have all kept well during these times. I can say that, as far as we know, no one in our community has tested positive for Covid 19 which is of course a huge relief. We know many have been shielding either as a result of advice or just through self-management.

We have begun meeting up again in small numbers at the hub in Paignton and The Grand for coffee. See our ‘Groups Page’ . We have tried to stay in touch through phone calls and our WhatsApp group.

As a charity serving you, we always want to do more so let us know how we can help.

On a personal note, post stroke I have needed routine and clarity so the last few months have proved more fatiguing than I would want… I know you understand what I mean.

The Big News is that we were successful in bidding for a National Lottery Coronavirus Community Fund. This is both a huge relief and motivation.

We have set two targets for the next 6 months.

The first is to become a sustainable charity through growing our staff and users’ bases. This has meant that we have volunteer posts available now. See our ‘Get Involved’ section.

The second ambition is to become more recognisable to all in our community in Torbay And South Devon. We want to be known to all: post stroke, carers and those at. If people know who we are we are confident that we can improve their health and well-being.

Through the fantastic efforts of David, the NHS and the support of ourselves we have been able not only to produce the Stroke Book online but to print hard copies for people to have.

These books are comprehensive directories of advice, guidance and signposts to all stroke services within Torbay And South Devon. They are, we believe, essential to everyone we try to help.

We have made them available in public places where we know we go and that support what we do.

You can pick up a free copy at:

Torbay Hospital (George Earl Ward),

Newton Abbot Hospital,

Paignton, Torquay and Brixham Libraries,

Boots at Browns Bridge.

The Hub Paignton

The Grand Coffee Group

Age UK

The list of where you can get them is growing every day and we hope very soon to be able to say they are at Dr surgeries and other community places. Follow our Facebook page for updates.

We had been planning a ‘launch’ of Torbay Stroke Support and it had been booked for last March…seems a world away now…

However the delay has given us a new plan. We intend to have a Well-Being day next year for all our community. We would hope that this would involve service providers and local businesses. We also would like professionals and the NHS to come along. Not only would we be offering an opportunity to network, we hope to offer talks, therapy sessions, guidance and possibly ‘products’ that we know can help us.

We invite you to tell us what you’d like to see as part of that day, perhaps who you’d like to be there and we’d like to offer you the chance to become involved. You may want to share your story, you may want to offer transport, you may want to help out in other ways.

If you email us, or ring us we will add you to a list of those interested and keep you up to date with plans.

If you can help distribute the Stroke Books, or can let us know of places that will have them to give out, please let us know. If you know anyone who wants to volunteer in other ways let us know. If you need something….let us know.
